Standards Based Grading
This year, in our class, we will be implementing standards based grading in math. Below you will find some information on the what, how, and the why of standards based grading. Please, please, please contact me with questions or concerns. I know this will be a shift in thinking for all of us. I am excited about this change and as a professional educator feel passionately that this is the best thing to do for our students.
What is Standards Based Grading
|
Why Standards Based Grading
The purpose of standards-based grading is to improve student achievement by focusing instruction and the alignment of curriculum with our standards and learning targets. Standards-based grading and reporting will provide better communication to students, parents, teachers and administrators on what each student knows and is able to do according to the identified standards and separately assess the influence of positive and consistent work habits on student learning. The How of Standards Based Grading
Standards based grading is a shift from traditional grading practices in that it is not focused on an average of student work and scores, but on specific, carefully chosen pieces of evidence that show a students progress to each individual standards. Students will no longer receive an overall math grade that is reflective of their work for an entire grading period, but will receive a mark for each standard. Students may be proficient in 4 out of 5 standards assessed during a grading period, but are missing something on the 5th standard. This allows teachers and parents to know how to focus their efforts to help their student be successful. Evidence pieces will be carefully chosen for each standard and students will have multiple opportunities to demonstrate their understanding of each standard. Unlike the traditional grading system, students are able to show mastery at any time |

Grading for Other Subjects
We will be working through the implementation of standards-based grading slowly beginning with math. Other subjects will still be assessed using the traditional grading system. Both standards-based grades and traditional grades can be viewed through FamilyLink using the button below.
